BARE HILL POND, HARVARD, MASSACHUSETTS

Aquatic plant surveys, in-lake and watershed water quality and wetland monitoring

Projects

ARC has been working closely with the Bare Hill Pond Watershed Committee to address elevated phosphorus concentrations, periodic algal blooms, invasive plant species and excessive aquatic plant growth. We've conducted several plant surveys to assess the efficacy of winter water level drawdown to control invasive plants as well as shoreline and connective wetland monitoring to evaluate potential impacts to non-target organisms. We are in the process of sampling and

evaluating pre and post installation of stormwater

treatment devices.

Database creation and data analysis for the Water Research Foundation

Working with WRS, ARC created a large database to assess technologies employed by the water supply industry for water quality monitoring, modeling and application of aeration/circulation and oxygenation systems. Data from over 115 waterbodies were entered, summarized and analyzed for trends. The analysis includes technologies used, how they were applied to address the stated problem (e.g. algal blooms, elevated metals etc.), whether the technology as applied was considered successful, adjustments and adaptations to improve success, lessons learned and costs. WRS is preparing three separate reports to communicate results to the water community which they can use as a tool to apply to their specific water supply. The reports are currently in review and should be available to the public in 2014.
